EMPs (electro-magnetic pulse) is a term (acronym) used to describe man-made plasma waves of charged particles. That doesn't mean the term EMP couldn't be used to describe what happens when when solar flares belch out a CME and it strikes the earth. Because of the potential magnitude of CMEs and their global impact the two terms are not used interchangably. Also, EMPs are earth-specific, CMEs are solar-specific.

Are CMEs the same as EMPs? Or, rather, do CMEs produce EMPs?
